LAPPG May Meeting

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

MAY’s Agenda:

PHILIP HODGETTS DEMOS “First Cuts”:

First Cuts takes editing log notes – similar to what would already be entered for long form documentary – and automates the process of creating first cuts with

story arc, b-roll and lower third titles. First Cuts allows editors and producers the opportunity to explore the stories that are available in the material and to juxtapose different versions while they seek inspiration and direction.

Many variations can be created in a few minutes and editors can use these first cuts for inspiration or as the basis of their own edit.

Philip Hodgetts has more than 25 years experience in writing, producing, directing, editing and motion graphic design across the entire production spectrum. He is President of Intelligent Assistance, Inc., a company

specializing in software and content for “on the spot” training for digital content creators and related software development.

DEKE SIMON: BUDGETS

Deke Simon is a documentary filmmaker, teacher of production planning at LMU and author of “Film & Video Budgets,” a now classic production handbook entering its 5th edition later this year. In this presentation, he will detail the three pre-requisites for effective production planning for both narrative and documentary filmmaking: script prep (or breakdown), scheduling, and budgeting. These three steps, taken in this sequence and done correctly, are a giant leap

toward successful production.
